Quinn in Solomon Islands

Joanna Quinn is in the Solomon Islands January/February 2014 looking at the use of customary practices of justice and acknowledgement following “the Tension”, a period beginning in 1998 that saw militant groups from two of the largest ethnic groups clash, resulting in escalating violence, including widespread rape and pillage.  Since 2001, an Australian-led, pan-South Pacific assistance mission called RAMSI (Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands) has been keeping the peace and working on strengthening governance in the Solomons.  Quinn is conducting interviews to ask people how and why they made the decisions they did about how to come to terms with “the Tension,” and the role that customary practices of justice and acknowledgement have played in that.
